Armin van de Corput is a Dutch-American crime boss and the former leader and namesake of the Corput crime family, formerly known as the Orwell family. He played a significant role in organized crime in Liberty City during the early 2000s, overseeing operations that included the robbery of 12 banks in the city between 2004 and 2008.
History
Armin was born in the Netherlands on January 17, 1974, to parents of Dutch and American heritage. His father, Erik van de Corput, was of Dutch descent, while his mother, Louise Orwell, had American, Scottish, and German roots. At the age of 15, on December 23, 1989, Armin arrived in the United States as a stowaway aboard the SS Fijenoord, fleeing his abusive father alongside his three brothers and mother. The ship docked in Virginia, where the family sought a fresh start. From there, they traveled to Liberty City to join his mother's relatives, the Orwells, who owned a trucking and shipping firm. He began working with them as a gopher while his mother supported the family by selling newspapers. Eventually, Armin and his brothers moved into a modest apartment in Broker, where he began to rebuild his life, though he eventually began to sell marijuana. Over time, he adopted the name Art Orwell, embracing his mother’s side of the family as his own.
In 1994, at the age of 20, Armin van de Corput unofficially married his cousin, Catherine Orwell, the sister of future Orwell family boss Paul Orwell. Together, they raised two sons, Thomas and Art Jr. The Orwell family included other notable members involved in crime, such as John Orwell and distant cousin William Orwell.
Criminal career
In Broker, Corput joined a pickpocket gang led by Joey Kurtz, another Dutch-born gangster. The organization was known for its prolific street crimes and served as Armin’s entry into the underworld. He learned to swipe pockets and also how to sell narcotics. In 1996, Corput was arrested as a suspicious person, though the charge was dismissed. However, a month later, he was apprehended in Outlook Park on a larceny charge. When he failed to appear in court, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Four years later, in 2000, Corput was arrested in Algonquin as a fugitive and returned to Broker. The larceny charge was ultimately dropped after he made restitution.
