Backup Calls are a series of five Free Mode missions in Grand Theft Auto Online given by Lieutenant Carrs to the player. They were added in The S.A.H.P. Update.
Description[]
After completing SAHP - End of Watch, Lieutenant Carrs will be promoted to the rank of captain, commanding the San Andreas Highway Patrol in Southern San Andreas. Occasionally, situations will occur where Carrs will request the player's assistance.
Carrs can call the player while they are not otherwise engaged in a free-roam activity and request that the player completes a random job. The player has the choice to accept or reject these jobs. If they reject the job, fail the job, or miss the call, they must wait 6 real-life hours (approximately one in-game week) before they can get another call. Note that exiting the game does not freeze the timer.
Stick-Up[]
- ❝Okay, uh, small little problem I need you to handle. Some assholes are sticking up Pacific Standard, and they're really good at their jobs. Local cops can't take it, and I doubt ours can either. Do you mind turning that place into a homicide scene? You can take the money, too. Not like the LSPD would return it or anything.❞
- — Carrs' phone call
Carrs informs the player that a bank robbery is currently taking place at Pacific Standard Public Deposit Bank, and that the LSPD cannot handle the situation. Reluctant to risk the lives of his own officers, Carrs requests that the player deal with the situation themselves.
Upon arriving at the bank, Carrs will call the player to tell them he has given the officers on scene a false tip about the robbers' getaway vehicle being several blocks away, allowing the player to enter. Inside the bank will be ten Professionals wearing ski masks and armed with Spec-Ops SMGs and Advanced Rifles. After dealing with them, the player must make their way to the vault, where they must fight a Professional with a Sawed-Off Shotgun and another Professional with Ballistic Equipment (albeit armed with an MG, likely for gameplay reasons). After killing both, the player must take a duffel bag of cash (as well as any cash laying about, totaling an additional $4,000).
Once the player exits the bank, Carrs will text the player to tell them the officers heard the commotion and believe the player is one of the robbers trying to escape; the player will promptly gain a three-star wanted level. Once the Cops are evaded, the mission is completed.
Evidence Collection[]
- ❝Okay, so, some crazy shootout just went down at the foundry. Big valuable metal op got torn down or something, I dunno. Unfortunately, because nothing in this city goes off without a hitch, the cops on scene are corrupt, and they want to line their pockets with gold or platinum or whatever. I don't want an I.A. crisis on my hands, so... let's just say you were passing by, okay?❞
- — Carrs' phone call
Carrs informs the player that a precious metal smuggling operation has been shut down at Grand Banks Steel Foundry. However, the LSPD officers on scene are corrupt and are attempting to take the evidence for himself. Carrs requests that the player deal with the situation to keep internal affairs away from him.
The foundry will be surrounded by LSPD detectives with Unmarked Cruisers and FIB Buffalos, with a NOOSE team inside the foundry. The player must take out the detectives outside, then enter the foundry, where they must deal with the NOOSE team and take the equipment (in a large duffel bag). Upon acquiring the bag, the player will gain a three-star wanted level. Once the Cops are evaded, the player must deliver the bag to the La Mesa Police Station, where a brief cutscene will play showing them entering the station. Once this ends, the player will spawn outside the station, and the mission will be completed.
Breakout[]
- ❝Hey, it's Captain Carrs. Yeah, I'll never get used to it. Anyways, uh, prison break going on down at Bolingbroke. Boilingbroke? Ballingbroke? The state prison in the desert. Huge raid. I guess they're trying to "liberate" every hardened gangster and killer in those walls. Mind going over there and closing the gates?❞
- — Carrs' phone call
Carrs informs the player that an organized breakout is occurring at Bolingbroke Penitentiary. Due to the size and extent of the breakout, Carrs requests that the player deal with the situation.
At the prison, the player must fight off multiple groups of inmates and Lost MC bikers (who appear to have orchestrated the breakout). The inmates fight with a variety of weapons apparently scavenged from the prison guards (namely Nightsticks, Combat Pistols, and Pump Shotguns), while the bikers use Sawed-Off Shotguns and SMGs, arriving in Gang Burritos and Daemons.
After the bikers and hostile inmates are killed, Carrs will text the player to tell them a stolen Prison Bus fled in the chaos, and advises them to pursue it. The Prison Bus will be near Sandy Shores, being pursued by SAHP officers in Police Buffalo STXs. The player must destroy the Prison Bus or kill the occupants. Once they do so, the player will gain a three-star wanted level. Once the Cops are evaded, the mission will be completed.
Going, Going, Gone[]
- ❝So, uh, hey. Y'know how we auction retired cop cars off Warstock now? Well, uh, we were gonna do that for one of our Gresleys, when some jerkasses jacked the flatbed it was on. It wasn't stripped of all its gear yet, so they've basically stolen a big box of tax-funded police gear they can use to get around us. I could totally send officers to deal with this, but you're way more delicate with cars, I think.❞
- — Carrs' phone call
Carrs informs the player that a decommissioned Police Gresley has been stolen in transit. The vehicle contains police gear that Carrs fears will be used by the thieves to consistently evade police. As the vehicle would likely be damaged in a regular police encounter, Carrs requests that the player steal it back.
The Police Gresley is on the back of a Flatbed traveling north on the Great Ocean Highway, driven and escorted by Kkangpae members in grey Intruders. The player must eliminate the Kkangpae members in the Intruders and the Flatbed (note that they are armed with SMGs and cannot shoot from the truck).
Once they are dealt with, Carrs will text the player, informing them that the Flatbed had a kill switch that was activated during the player's attack, and that the player must now drive the Police Gresley away themselves. Once the player enters the Police Gresley, three waves of two Osakas each will spawn and attempt to kill the player. The player must deliver the Police Gresley to the lot behind the Mission Row Police Station, where a short cutscene will play showing the player exiting the vehicle. Once this ends, the player will spawn outside the station, and the mission will be completed.
Truck Hunt[]
- ❝Hey. So, bank trucks. One of them gets robbed, not too big of a deal. Another one gets robbed, eh, split the response. But when four of them get jacked simultaneously, you sort of raise your eyebrows, yeah? Looks like an organized job. Two were stolen near the Union Depository, while the others are just... somewhere. We've got every officer looking for them right now, but we could use an extra hand. You mind?❞
- — Carrs' phone call
Carrs informs the player that several Gruppe Sechs Stockades are being robbed simultaneously across the city. As the number of incidents is overwhelming police (likely the intention of the robbers), Carrs requests the player's assistance.
The player must locate each Stockade and eliminate the team of robbers with it. The locations of the trucks are always the same:
Truck # | Location | Notes |
---|---|---|
Truck #1 | Las Lagunas Boulevard, Pillbox Hill | Spawns driving northbound. Will drive randomly until the player approaches, after which it will stop and the robbers will exit the truck to combat the player. |
Truck #2 | Prosperity Street Promenade and Red Desert Avenue, Del Perro | Stopped in the road, surrounded by LSPD units. The officers will not attack the player; likewise, the player cannot attack the officers. The robbers will be fighting the officers. |
Truck #3 | The Diamond Casino & Resort parking lot | Appears to be one of the black-and-white Diamond Casino Stockades as used in Casino Heist - Big Con. |
Truck #4 | Roy Lowenstein Boulevard, Davis | Spawns driving southbound. Will drive randomly until the player approaches, after which it will stop and the robbers will exit the truck to combat the player. |
After all four robbery crews are dealt with, Carrs will inform the player that a fifth Stockade is being robbed in Mirror Park. When the player arrives, the robbers will be fleeing in a dark blue Minivan with bulletproof tires. Once the robbers are killed, the player must leave the area, after which the mission will be completed.
Rewards[]
Each job will net the player RP and $62,500, totaling to $312,500.
Upon completion of all five missions, Carrs will call the player and request that they go to La Mesa Police Station. The player is not required to go there immediately, though Carrs' icon will remain over the station on the map.
When the player arrives, a short cutscene will play where they enter and leave the station. When the player returns to Free Mode, the .38 Snubnose will be added to the player's weapon wheel. Police-themed liveries for the Stanier Cruiser Custom, Premier Classic, and Noire will also be unlocked at Los Santos Customs.
Trivia[]
- These missions can be seen as a spiritual successor to the Vigilante side missions from previous entries in the Grand Theft Auto series, as they have the player, a criminal, taking out criminals while helping law enforcement.
- The music that plays during these missions is "Greyhound", an originally unused song from the game files. A variant of "Greyhound" is used as the pause menu music in Grand Theft Auto V.
- The name of the mission "Breakout" is likely a reference to the 1976 arcade game Breakout.
- The fleeing robbery crew in Truck Hunt is likely a reference to the movie The Town, which contains a scene where a team of robbers flee an armored car robbery in a dark blue Dodge Caravan, the real-life inspiration for the Minivan.
