Grand Theft Auto: The Great White North is a spinoff game set in a fictionalized version of Canada, focusing on five provinces. It stars a Canadian protagonist, Cloud Doppler, and features five volumes with four chapters each, totaling 20 chapters. This makes it the most ambitious GTA game ever created, surpassing even Red Dead Redemption 2 in scale and scope.

Development[]

On July 11, 2020, the project was originally planned to be titled GTA: River City, set in a fictionalized version of Edmonton.[1] However, the creator was occupied with schoolwork at the time, and the idea was left undeveloped. The concept remained abandoned until it was revived in 2025.

April 15th 2022 crash[]

After April 15, 2022, impacted the creator's ideas, the game was ultimately canceled. However, it was later rebranded as The Great White North. The protagonist, originally planned to be "Zack," was replaced by Cloud Doppler. With the reuse of River City as part of the new game, the creator also incorporated previously unused concepts and ideas into the project.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay retains the classic GTA style while introducing new features, including the Honor system borrowed from Red Dead Redemption 2. Unlike most previous GTA titles (except GTA V, which featured three endings), Volumes 3–5 offer multiple endings based on your choices and reputation. Additionally, a variety of minigames make a return like GTA IV and San Andreas. Fan-favorite activities like bowling, pool, QUB3D, poker, blackjack, and more are included.

Volume 0 set between 2015 and 2020, and it follows Cloud, who was born on February 26, 2005, making him the youngest protagonist in the GTA universe. Compared to other protagonists like CJ (19 in the prologue, 24 in the main game), Franklin (25), and Luis from The Ballad of Gay Tony (25), Cloud is still a teenager during this period and is unable to drive cars or operate heavy vehicles legally. that volume took heavy inspiration from Bully and Yakuza, featuring a school setting with various side activities, social interactions, and dynamic combat. Cloud's unique fighting style, "Nostalgia," is based on mimicking Mario’s moves from Super Smash Bros along with Super Mario 64.

Settings[]

Despite not being part of the 3D or HD universes, this GTA game introduces a new setting called the "Nostalgia Universe" or "Nostalgia-verse." The game takes place in a fictionalized version of Canada, spanning five provinces from the west to the east coast. These include:

Trivia[]

  • Cloud Doppler is inspired by traits from every GTA protagonist (and even GTA-like franchises like Watch Dogs) to create a well-rounded and dynamic character:
    • Claude (GTA III): Cloud experiences betrayal but remains obedient and efficient, as he following orders
    • Tommy Vercetti (GTA: Vice City): Cloud starts his journey penniless, seeking to rebuild his life from the ground up.
    • CJ (GTA: San Andreas): Cloud returns to his birthplace, Toontown, much like CJ’s return to Los Santos.
    • Niko Bellic (GTA IV): Cloud deeply cares for his sister, the only sibling who genuinely supports about him.
    • Michael De Santa (GTA V): Cloud is offered a second chance at life, struggling to balance his ambitions with his past.
    • Franklin Clinton (GTA V): Just as Franklin resented living at his aunt's house, Cloud despises his former hometown, which he compares to the "Detroit of Canada."
    • Trevor Phillips (GTA V): Both Cloud and Trevor endured rough childhoods and have tense relationships with certain groups, such as the Liberty City Bikers.
    • Aiden Pearce (Watch Dogs): Cloud nearly loses his closest friend and is driven by a desire for revenge to make things right.
