The police are uniformed officers responsible for enforcing the law, operating out of the Las Venturas Police Department, servicing the city of Las Venturas. They ensure public and social order, through the legitimized and restricted use of force. The Police are present in all Grand Theft Auto games.

Police are trained in first aid and rescue, because police officers are often one of the first people to get to a place where people are sick or injured, such as a car accident, fire or shooting.



Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto titles, the use of a firearm is only when lives are at risk, no exceptions. They can be upholstered to use as a threat and a deterrent, but only utilized in a life or death situation. This statement is subject to a variety of factors as well as personal issues by the officer at the time. When resorting to firearms to subdue a situation, an officer will be aware of his surroundings; no longer would an officer hypothetically murder their families if it meant killing the criminal.


A newly implemented addition to the on-foot officer is his handheld radio transmitter, which they can use to relay situation reports, direct other officers, update the command, or simply communicate between the ranks. This feature has made the police more connected, and thus, harder to outwit and escape compared to older titles. As the wanted level in The After Dark Scene is sight driven, instead of radius like previous games.

Tear Gas

Present in Grand Theft Auto V, this thrown projectile was widely unused (by both NPC and Players). In this new installment, these non-lethal grenades have been revamped, and re-used effectively. When tactical officers cannot flush out a criminal, as it would endanger civilians or unnecessarily endanger themselves, said officers will utilize these grenades to disorient and blind criminals.

Artificial Intelligence

One of the major complaints from the community after the release of Grand Theft Auto V, was the police and wanted system. Some said it was too challenging, repetitive or annoying, and took the general fun and enjoyment from the game. Police officers had ridiculous accuracy, and fired handguns with sniper-esque aim and kill from streets away; light speed vehicles, which could catch up to and derail even the fastest sports cars; and predict where the player was going before the player knew, like psychics. In The After Dark Scene, these issues have been fixed and changed substantially, making them the most realistic mechanics to date.
