The Spanish ransacked the new continent for gold. and once Portugal, the Spanish were quick to make a treaty truly unfair to their fellow Iberian kingdom, with the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. Originally, Spain's American gains were separate colonies, all administered by separate Viceroys, by then Spanish America consisted of the West Indies, and the Yucatan Peninsular.
